Carrier Chillers Selected for Major Chiller Upgrade in London

Thanks to the thorough planning and collaboration, the installation went smoothly. By the next morning, the street had returned to normal.

The Client

Located in the financial district in London, this building is one of the largest in the area and sets the standards for Grade A office space and accommodation.

The Challenge

The building had been served by six air-cooled chillers since opening in 2004, but newer, more efficient models were needed to help align with the building’s energy efficiency targets.

The building’s location also presented a set of unique challenges for this project. Months of meticulous planning to arrange for road closures and the removal of traffic lights to erect a crane were needed to ensure this project was completed.

The Solution

Carrier supplied six AquaForce® Vision 30KAVIZE air-cooled variable-speed screw liquid chiller using HFO R-1234ze refrigerant.
The AquaForce® 30KAVIZE screw liquid chillers where selected, installed and commissioned because they offered:

  • Compact footprint - a third shorter than the previous 30KAV model
  • High energy performance – SEPR 25% higher than the minimum Ecodesign 2018 requirements
  • Up to 40% less refrigerant charge of R1234ze with a GWP of less than two.

The 30KAVIZE’s Greenspeed® intelligence feature helps to minimise energy consumption and maximise performance as the compressor constantly adjusts output by matching speed to the cooling load and environmental conditions, resulting in significant energy savings.

The unit’s Hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) R-1234ze refrigerant has a GWP index below one and provides an environmentally sustainable solution that complies with regulations.

To help the contractor meet the tight timescale, Carrier delivered the six units straight from the production facility in France.

The Result

The process of lifting the units into position on the roof of the building started at midnight on a Friday and took until 8pm on Sunday night. Thanks to the thorough planning and collaboration between Carrier and the contractor, the installation went smoothly and by the next morning, the street had returned to normal.

Carrier now provides ongoing service and maintenance support to the end user with a BluEdgeTM service contract.
