Carrier Recognizes World Food Day; Collaborates with the United Nations World Food Programme to Improve the Cold Chain in West Africa
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -
At Carrier, we are a global leader in cold chain solutions and we innovate to address the needs of people and our planet. We help preserve, protect and extend the supply of food and medicine around the globe, and we are actively working to address climate change and tackle global challenges.
On World Food Day, held every year on Oct. 16, we reflect on our role in fighting hunger and malnutrition. More than 3.1 billion people – 42% of humanity – are unable to afford a healthy diet. Unhealthy diets are the leading cause of all forms of malnutrition – undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity, which now exist in most countries, cutting across socio-economic classes.
The cold chain plays a crucial role in eliminating food loss and preserving food quality. Today, food is globally lost and wasted at an alarming scale. Although the planet has roughly 8 billion people, estimates suggest that enough food is produced to feed 10 billion. Yet, more than 780 million people experience hunger daily.
By sustaining optimal cold temperatures, the cold chain solution effectively curtails the proliferation of harmful bacteria, decelerates the enzymatic processes responsible for food spoilage and preserves the nutritional integrity of the products. The absence of reliable cold chain systems to preserve the freshness, nutritional integrity and safety of food products has significant implications for public health. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, effective refrigeration can prevent the annual waste of 526 million tons of food, providing people with essential and healthy nutrition.
In 2022, Carrier started a strategic collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), to help advance cold chain development and logistics training in West Africa and beyond. We are supporting, with the collaboration of other leading companies, the development of a world-class Transport Training Center in Accra, Ghana, aimed at enhancing transport and logistics capacities across the region. Since 2023, the Transport Training Center has trained more than 370 participants from 21 countries and more than 35% of the participants are women.
Carrier continues to provide training, technology and sustainable cold chain solutions to aid communities and humanitarian organizations, aiming to eliminate hunger and malnutrition globally in the near future.
