Carrier Energy Demand System Provides Automated Energy Management
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -
Carrier has released its Energy Demand System, which creates a wireless network of automated demand-management and demand-response controllers that can be installed onto any packaged rooftop unit. Utilizing patented intelligence, the system can dramatically reduce peak electrical demand by up to 30 percent in commercial and light commercial properties and allow for effective scheduling of overnight and weekend loads. Carrier, the world’s leader in high-technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
Controllers within the wireless network broadcast unit power readings to each other every 30 seconds, and each controller is capable of making the decision to run or delay unit operation every few minutes to ensure the most effective use of energy. Plus, a gateway provides two-way Internet communication without the need to access the site’s Internet connection. Power readings and controller decisions are uploaded to the server every five minutes for data logging and analysis.
The Carrier Energy Demand System is as easy to install as a thermostat and requires no special training. Once installed, the controllers work together to intelligently communicate and manage the duty cycle of the units being controlled, which makes this an ideal solution when a full-building automation system is not required.
In addition, the Energy Demand System is demand-response-capable and OpenADR compliant, which allows for systematic load shedding when requested by utilities or energy aggregators.
“The Carrier Energy Demand System is an ideal solution when a building does not require full automation, but there is a need to control electrical demand across several rooftop units,” said Greg Alcorn, vice president, commercial sales and marketing, Carrier. “The controllers are easy to install and seamlessly connect with one another to provide the building owner with a reliable and effective energy management system.”
