Coastal Heating and Air
By Travis Baugh
If you live near the coast, you know the effects that harsh seacoast air can have on an HVAC unit. Carrier offers a new line of outdoor products with exclusive, patented welded aluminum coil technology. These new outdoor products will help deliver the comfort and performance you expect with exceptional corrosion resistance for lasting durability.
Why Corrosion Resistance Matters For Coastal HVAC
Living in a coastal area brings with it the unique challenge of corrosive seacoast air. Salt water can be carried as far away as two miles from the coast. The severity of corrosion depends on distance from ocean, wind direction, relative humidity, and coil temperatures. Corrosion can also be caused by pollution, road salt and irrigation systems.
Carrier’s Answer To Corrosion – Coastal Air Units With Welded Aluminum Technology
Prior to 2023, Carrier coastal air conditioner and heat pump models used a copper tube and aluminum fins. To avoid galvanic corrosion between these two metals, Carrier transitioned all coastal models to its patented welded aluminum coil technology. Welded aluminum benefits include:
- Zinc cladding layer applied for improved corrosion resistance.
- 71% thicker wall than our current copper tubing.
- Up to 81% better projected lifespan vs. copper coil.
- Special heat shrink wrap applied to all factory-brazed copper-aluminum joints to isolate from seacoast air.
- Extensive salt spray testing during development – showing no degradation of fins after seven years (and counting).
Additional Protection For Coastal HVAC Units
In addition to improving the coil, Carrier has also made other improvements throughout our coastal products to protect from the corrosiveness of the seacoast air including a thicker fan guard polyester powder coat, thicker zinc plating, a two-layer coating process instead of one, and an increase in overall coating thickness.
Contact A Carrier Dealer on Carrier Coastal Heating and Air Units
Carrier offers two tiers featuring coastal units, offering you options for improved corrosion protected air conditioners and heat pumps.
The Performance™ Series 26TPA8---C air conditioner and 27TPA8—C heat pump offer high energy efficiency up to 18.0 SEER2 along with two-stage cooling with high/low setting to provide more even temperatures throughout the home. These units offer sound levels as low as 67 decibels while leveraging Puron Advance™ refrigerant and Carrier’s WeatherArmor™ Ultra cabinet for protection. This unit can be part of a connected system with Intelisense™ technology.
The Comfort™ Series 26SCA5---C air conditioner and 27SCA5---C heat pump offer energy efficiency up to 16.5 SEER2 with single-stage operation that offers on/off settings to deliver cooling when needed. Sound levels are as low as 71 decibels with these units. Environmentally-friendly Puron Advance™ refrigerant and Carrier’s WeatherArmor™ Ultra cabinet are also utilized.
In addition to our extensive standard warranty, coastal air conditioners and heat pumps have a five-year parts limited warranty in residential applications when the mechanism of failure is seacoast corrosion. Note that cosmetic corrosion does not constitute part failure. See the warranty certificate for each product for complete coverage details.
