Carrier Introduces Local High School Students to Careers in HVAC through Vocational Program and Training

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana -

In recognition of Manufacturing Day, Carrier hosted over 40 high school students from Area 31 Career Center at the Carrier Gas Furnace Center of Excellence on the West Side. The Area 31 Career Center is a career and technical school that exposes enrollees to opportunities within skilled trades. The students, prospective HVAC technicians, received a hands-on learning experience, toured one of the largest and most advanced gas furnace factories in the world, and worked on a group activity in the recently launched Carrier Technical Training Center. Carrier is a part of Carrier Global Corporation (NYSE: CARR), global leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions.

"Taking these high school students on a tour of the plant and training center truly energizes everyone involved," said Tim Evers, Senior Director of Operations, Carrier. "It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to share the importance of pursuing a career in the trades, with the hope of inspiring the next generation of skilled technicians. We’re optimistic that the students left feeling motivated and ready to consider HVAC as a career path, with the potential to return to Carrier as future team members, dealers, or technicians."

Held annually in October, Manufacturing Day and Month is recognized by the National Association of Manufacturers. Carrier’s Gas Furnace Center of Excellence in Indianapolis produces over one million furnaces each year and boasts a vibration room, psychrometric test chambers, quality clinic and manifold robots. In 2023, Carrier launched its new, state-of-the-art 6,000-square-foot technical training center to help prepare the next generation of skilled HVAC technicians. The training center adjoins the gas furnace manufacturing plant located off W. Morris Street.

Beyond World Manufacturing Day, Carrier supports Area 31 year-round. We are giving students an enhanced experience to add to their current HVAC curriculum. The Heating and Air Conditioning Program helps students prepare for and explore career opportunities related to occupations in Heating and Air Conditioning. Study in this field includes tools, safety, electrical circuits, proper handling of equipment, temperature control, installation of equipment, sheet metal layout and design, and work attitudes.

"My father owns an appliance repair business, so I've been working with him in the field for a couple years now,” said local student Benjamin Gregory. “I got into HVAC to get my EPA Type III certification to handle the new refrigerant."

Carrier’s commitment to addressing the growing demand for skilled HVAC technicians is exhibited through its collaboration with Area 31 and its Tech Up program, an ongoing initiative designed to empower the next generation of HVAC techs, providing them with top-notch training and resources. In addition to supporting community groups like Area 31, Carrier is proud to support local organizations including Habitat for Humanity for nearly 30 years, Indiana Black Expo, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, IU Minority Engineering Advancement Program (MEAP), Wheeler Mission, Gleaners Food Bank, the Indianapolis Urban League Training Works program, and the Boys & Girls Clubs.
