Here's How It Works

Energy supply and energy demand must always be in balance on the electric grid. During periods of especially high demand for electricity - like during a summer heat wave when air conditioner usage spikes - grid operators traditionally fire up additional fossil fuel power plants to ensure there’s enough electricity to go around, which can make energy more expensive - and dirtier - for everyone.

But now, we have a better way to balance the grid.

Virtual power plants (or VPPs) organize energy users to reduce their energy consumption by a small amount when the grid is strained. VPPs aggregate and sell these energy reductions to grid operators, like a traditional power plant sells energy. What’s more, according to some estimates, VPPs have the future potential to cut millions of metric tons of carbon emissions per year.

Consumers with smart home devices, like Carrier’s Smart Thermostat, can get involved by enrolling their devices into SmartSave, our VPP program. Participating is easy: after you opt in, when a grid event is called due to high energy demand, Carrier will automatically reduce power demand or adjust your temperature by up to 4 degrees for a few hours through your Carrier Smart Thermostat. You’ll earn an annual reward for participating in these events, plus reducing your energy usage during higher rate peak periods may mean monthly energy savings reflected on your electricity bills. SmartSave enables you to play an active role in creating a more reliable power system. By participating, you and your neighbors collectively may help reduce utility provider reliance on “peaker” plants. Peaker plants may be used by your utility provider during peak demand and typically emit more pollution to the environment than other power plants.
