What to Look for in Combined Heating and Cooling Systems
Comfort Features
Whole-home heating and cooling systems deliver a comfortable home environment year-round. The single- and multi-stage compressors and premium features to give you the most precise temperature control and consistent comfort.
System Type
Packaged products can be powered by three different methods.
- Cooling-only packaged products run solely on electricity.
- Gas heating and cooling units use gas for heating and electricity for cooling.
- Heat pump packaged products use electricity to heat and cool
Sound Performance
Central heating and cooling units are designed with components that help keep sound levels low, like compressor sound blankets, compressor isolation grommets, quiet motor mounts and aerodynamic tops.
Energy Savings
Central heating and cooling units and heat pumps are rated by their Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2 (SEER2), Energy Efficiency Ratio 2 (EER2) and Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE). These ratings are much like miles per gallon (MPG) for a car: the higher the rating, the more energy-efficient the system.
Other ways to save energy in the home include:
- Install a Smart Thermostat: Smart thermostats allow you to program heating and cooling schedules based on your daily routine and adjust temperatures remotely via smartphone apps. They can optimize energy usage by automatically reducing heating or cooling when you're away or asleep.
- Set Temperature Wisely: During winter, lower your temperature when you're sleeping or away. In summer, raise your temperature when you're sleeping away. Even a small change in temperature can result in significant energy savings over time.
- Maintain your HVAC System: Regularly clean or replace air filters, and schedule professional maintenance for your air conditioner to ensure it operates efficiently. Dirty filters and neglected HVAC systems can lead to reduced efficiency and higher energy consumption.
What are the main types of HVAC systems?
- Split Systems: Split systems consist of components both inside and outside the home. They typically include an outdoor unit containing the compressor and condenser coil and an indoor unit containing the evaporator coil and blower. Split systems are the most common type of residential HVAC system.
- Packaged Systems: Packaged systems contain all components in a single outdoor unit. They are commonly used in homes without space for indoor equipment.
- Ductless Mini-Split Systems: Ductless mini-split systems provide individualized heating and cooling to specific zones or rooms without the need for ductwork. They consist of an outdoor unit connected to one or more indoor air-handling units via refrigerant lines.
Heat and Cool with Packaged HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING UNITS
Packaged HVAC systems offer several benefits:
- Space-Saving Design: Packaged systems contain all heating and cooling components in a single outdoor unit, making them ideal for homes with limited indoor space.
- Easy Installation: Installation of packaged systems is typically straightforward since all components are housed in one unit, reducing the complexity and time required for installation.
- Versatility: Packaged systems can be installed on rooftops, on the ground, or even on the side of a home, offering greater flexibility in placement options than traditional central air systems.
- Reduced Noise: Because the noisy components are located outside, packaged systems tend to produce less indoor noise compared to traditional heat and air systems, providing quieter operation.
- Simplified Maintenance: Maintenance tasks, such as filter changes and system inspections, are more accessible with packaged systems than traditional heating systems since all components are housed in one unit, simplifying upkeep.
